Blog Info Update

Dear Dave (and mom and others),

The pictures I post will not stay up, so the captions now explain a little box with a question mark. I totally promise they didn't originally look like that. Thanks.

Rachel

4. First Review paragraph of "Spring Awakening" from the NYT (Charles Isherwood): "As species go, the rock star is relatively young. Carbon dating has fixed its emergence from the primordial ooze of postwar pop at sometime in the 1950's, somewhere in the continental United States. So it is disorienting to find the 19th-century German schoolboys in the new musical "Spring Awakening" yanking microphones from inside their little woolen jackets, fixing us with baleful gazes and screaming amplified angst into our ears." ://theater2.nytimes.com/2006/06/16/theater/reviews/16awak.html?scp=2&sq=Spring+Awakening+musical+review+&st=nyt

5.  The off-broadway production has a masked man. The broadway production had to cut him out. So basically, the off-broadway version is closer to the original script.

6. If I attend the musical I will be driving to...the Music Hall in downtown Kansas City anytime between October 13th-18th. Tickets are around $42.00 (Mom, we need to go see this.)

7. There is indeed an Amateur production available. You can purchase it through MTL.

8. David Rooney reports that, "There's not only the moral corruption of our youth, but the creeping sensuality of these liberal-minded times."

9.  Franzen, fo sho.

Spring Awakening: The Basics

Spring Awakening has been a controversial play from the moment of publication in 1892.  Centering around sexual maturation with characters of 14 and 15, the "spring awakenings" are the first "stirrings" of sexual curiosities. The play deals with a colorful cast of characters including ten girls/women, and fifteen men/women.  The leading boys are Melchior, Moritz, Hanschen, Ernst, Georg, and Otto.  The lovely ladies are Wendla, Martha, Thea, Anna, and Ilse.  Throughout the entire show, they manage to get into little spots of trouble together.

Basic Facts about the play
  • This was the playwright's first play
  • The play takes place in Germany in 1892
  • It is believed that the characters live near or in Hamburg, Germany

What is Dramaturgy?

LMDA "Definitions" Page

The Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas define Dramaturgy as: "Contextualizing the world of a play, establishing connections among the text, and creating conversations about plays in their communities". That is just naming a few of the most basic definitions for this most mysterious word.
Basically, it's like making an informed decision (in a way, it's sort of like how scientists use hypotheses).  The major difference is, this information is used to help the team/group make an informed decision.  It's mildly important to comprehend - scratch that - hugely important that an actor comprehends this term.  In order to rightfully create the fictional world a play takes place in, the actor should know what all unknown words mean, the time period pertaining to the play, understanding unknown values of money, etc.
Know what you are talking about if you are performing it!!
